  What is my User ID?

Your User ID for the library is the same as your User ID for your student account: it is the number that appears on the
front of your NYSID ID card.  This User ID allows you to log into campus computers, log in to library resources from
  home, etc.

The only Library resource which requires another User ID is IDOL.  You can retrieve this User ID (and password) by
logging on to this secure page (with your regular user name and password):
  http://intranet.nysid.net/idol_passwords.htm.

  What is my Password?

Your Password is assigned to you by the Information Services Department when you first register at NYSID.  If you do
not know your password, it can be retrieved by filling out this form: Password Retrieval Form

The only library resource requiring a different Password is IDOL.  This Password can be retrieved using your regular
ID and Password on this secure page: http://intranet.nysid.net/idol_passwords.htm.

How do I get to Course Study Images?

Course Study Images are accessed by clicking on the link Course Study Images on the upper right hand corner
of the Library Homepage.  You will then be asked to input your User ID and Password.  This will take you to a
secure page with links to various course pages with study images.

What is the difference between Course Study Images and IDOL?

Course Study Images are images selected by faculty for specific courses.  They may be all of the images from a
given lecture or course, or they may be a series of study images for an exam or project.  They are thumbnail images
with a brief descriptive label.  Usually these images will also be available in IDOL.

IDOL (Interior Design OnLine) is NYSID's digital image database.  It is a searchable catalog of images including
many of the images used in the curriculum.  It works in much the same manner as a library catalog, allowing
searching by keyword, subject, title, creator, date, etc.  Furthermore, IDOL allows users to see a full record of data
on the image as well as the ability to magnify and print images.

  How do I access IDOL?

To access IDOL, click on the IDOL link on the top center of the Library Homepage.  You will be asked for a User ID
and password.  These are different than your regular ID and Password and can be retrieved from this secure page:
http://intranet.nysid.net/idol_passwords.htm.  You will need to make sure that all Pop-Up Blockers are disabled
on the IDOL login screen.  To insure they are off, go to the Tools Menu on Internet Explorer and under "Pop-Up Blocker"
click on "Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker".   Additionally, many users have other Pop-Up blocking software installed on
their computers (particularly common are Pop-Up blockers on Google and Yahoo toolbars).  Make sure all of these
are disabled.  You will then select IDOL Teaching Collection (which contains the images that support the curriculum)
or IDOL: Interior Design Online (public collection) and be able to proceed.  Faculty wishing to use IDOL in teaching
should schedule an appointment with the Director of the Library or the Assistant Director for training in how to use
  the presentation software for IDOL.

The Library does not have what I need.  Can you get it for me?

If the Library does not have a book or periodical that you would like to consult, you are first referred to New York
University's Bobst Library or Parsons School of Design's Gimbel Library, as we have a cooperative agreement with
these two libraries and you are allowed full access to them and can check books out from them with the same
privileges you enjoy at NYSID.  If the item you need is currently in print, in our collecting scope and affordable, we
are happy to order it.  However, this process usually takes two to three weeks before the book is received at NYSID.
If you wish to make an acquisitions request, please contact the Director of the Library.  Faculty requesting new
acquisitions are asked to fill out this electronic form.

How can I find journal/magazine articles?

Periodical articles are not indexed in BobCat, the Library's online catalog.  To search for articles you are therefore
referred to the Avery Index of Architectural Periodicals and the Design and Applied Arts Index.  These databases
index journals and magazines in architecture and design.  After finding relevant articles, you can see if the NYSID
Library has them by consulting our alphabetical list of periodical holdings.  Issues from 1996 to the present are
available in the library.  Issues from before 1996 must be requested from Library staff, who will retrieve them from
storage within fifteen minutes of request.

How is the Product Literature organized?

Our Product Literature collection is organized following the Construction Specification Institute's classification system.
This is the system used by the industry standard, Sweet's Catalog (of which the current set is available in the library).
A list of our holdings in product literature (in CSI order) can be found here: Product Literature Holdings.

How do I access Library resources from home?

The Library Homepage, BobCat and the freely available websites linked to the Library website can all be accessed
remotely from any computer with internet access, just like on campus.  However, the Library site also contains
links to various subscription services that are accessed at school through IP recognition.  These services can be
accessed remotely, but their links on the Library Homepage will not work off campus.  To access these resources
from a remote location, click on the link in the lower right hand corner of the Library Homepage,
Connect from Home.  A  dialog box will appear asking for your User ID and Password.  After submitting them, you
will be connected to a secure page with links to these resources.  Use of Avery Index and DAAI require that you
have the current version of JAVA installed on your PC.  If you do not, a link is provided for you to download the
  necessary software.

What other libraries can I use?

As enrolled students at NYSID in good standing, you are allowed full access with borrowing privileges to New York
University's Bobst Library and the Gimbel Library of Parsons School of Design.  These two libraries are excellent
resources with broader holdings than our library which is really focused on Interior Design, Architecture and related
disciplines.  Additionally, New York Public Library is a terrific resource, particularly the circulating Mid-Manhattan
branch.  The NYPL's Social Science and Humanities Research Library (5th Avenue and 42nd Street) is the premiere
library in the city and is open to all, however, books from their collection do not circulate.  If books needed are
unavailable at these locations, library staff can write referrals to almost every library in the city.  These referrals,
however are restricted to the books  that are selected in advance, and only permit on-site usage.

  How do I scan?

The Library maintains five scanning stations (two 11 x 17", three 8 1/2 x 11").  Additional scanners are available in
the third floor CAD Lab.  For basic instructions in the use of NYSID's scanners, please go to our scanning guide page.

Can you help me with software?

Library staff is here to provide training and assistance for use of library resources such as the BobCat catalog,
Avery Index, IDOL, etc.  When available, we are also happy to provide basic assistance with other fundamental
applications such as MS Word, Photoshop, etc.  However, for more advanced help, you are referred to NYSID's
tutoring service.  The Library is not able to offer assistance with AutoCAD and other professional software.

Can I schedule a Reference Interview?

Students and faculty doing advanced research are encouraged to schedule an appointment with the Director
of the Library for a reference consultation.  This is particularly recommended for students researching BFA and MFA
Thesis projects, but is open to anyone looking to engage in serious research who wants to get the most out of what
the Library offers. To schedule a meeting please call the Director at (212) 472-1500 x216 or send and email to
eric@nysid.edu.  All Library staff is trained to answer basic reference questions you may have, and you should not
be shy about asking for help.  Working with Library staff helps students develop better research skills that are helpful
throughout their scholastic and professional lives.

How do I report a problem?

If you encounter any problems with equipment (computers, copiers, etc.), please report them to Library staff
immediately.  If you don't tell us, we won't know.  Such problems should be reported to whoever is sitting at the
front desk.  Paper jams, toner replacement, etc. can usually be fixed immediately.  Larger problems may require
a visit from a technician, so the sooner such problems are reported, the sooner services can be restored.  Problems
not involving equipment, such as missing books, etc., should be reported to the Director of the Library.
