Images & Documentation of Modern Houses

There is a wealth of images of individual houses in the library.  Most of them are photographs, both in black and white and
in color.  Some of the images are also diagrammatic, such as plans, elevations, and sections, although they are not as
numerous or universal as photographs.  Details, both in plan and section, are occasionally available in printed sources.  In
most cases there will not be an entire book written on one building.  There are exceptions, however, such as Fallingwater,
Villa Savoye, and the Farnsworth House, among several others.

  Steps to follow:

  1.  Make sure you know the following information about the building:

Building name(s)—often names change over time, or, if the building is in a non-English-speaking country, references
may be in a language other than English, or in both.

Date(s)—a general idea of when the building was conceived, designed, and constructed.

      Architects(s)—if known.

Location (city and country; also state if in the United States)—often indexes are arranged by location.

  2.  Search the library catalog (BobCat) using one of more of the following strategies:

Keyword:  enter essential elements of building name, such as Red House, Fallingwater, or Robie House.

Keyword:  enter name of architect (last name, first name), for example, Mies van der Rohe, Ludwig.  In order to locate a
specific building you may need to examine a book about the range of work produced by an architect.  In that case, the
index at the end of the book is essential for finding a specific building.

Subject:  enter one of the following for a subject search

Architecture, Domestic – Designs and plans

Architecture, Domestic – History – 20th century

Architecture, Domestic – Europe – Designs and plans

Architecture, Domestic – United States – Designs and plans

Architecture, Modern – 20th century – Designs and plans

Buildings – Designs and plans

Dwellings – History – 20th century

Again, the index at the end of the book is essential for finding a specific building.  Read the introductory matter to the index
for an idea of how information is arranged and what symbols mean.  Sometimes buildings are listed first by locality.  The
description field of the catalog record will tell you whether there are illustrations (“ill.”) and whether they are in color.

  3.  Search the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals

Remember that the library does not subscribe to every title indexed in the Avery Index; consult the periodicals list.

Enter keyword(s):  a distinctive set of words to identify your topic, such as Winton Gehry, for the Winton Guest House in
  Minnesota, designed by Frank Gehry.

Note: to access Avery Index of campus, you must login through the link "connect from home" on the Library Homepage
with your student ID and Password.
